How to choose a magnetic phone wallet for your iPhone

A magnetic phone wallet is a small card holder with magnets inside that snaps onto the back of an iPhone with MagSafe. Choosing one comes down to six questions: how strong, how many cards, stand or no stand, tracker or no tracker, what case, and what phone.

TopMade magnetic phone wallets in several colors

1. Magnet strength comes first

A magnetic wallet that slides off in a pocket is worse than no wallet. Look for a number, not an adjective: TopMade lists 3800 to 4200 Gauss, or 4.4 lb of pull, on its wallets. The MagSafe ring inside the iPhone is the other half of the connection, so the hold is strongest on a bare phone or a MagSafe case and weakest through a thick case without magnets.

Wallets with a hinge or a tracker are heavier, so they use more magnets — twenty instead of sixteen — to keep the same hold. Grab the phone by the wallet a few times when it's new: if it stays on, it will stay on in the pocket.

2. How many cards do you really carry?

Count the cards you used this month. Most people land on three or four: a debit card, a credit card, an ID and a transit or work badge. A four-card magnetic phone wallet stays thin enough for a front pocket and keeps the phone easy to hold.

More capacity means more thickness. If you carry nine cards, consider which two could stay at home.

3. A hinge for video, or a flat wallet

Some MagSafe wallets have a hinge that props the iPhone up on a table — portrait for a video call, landscape for a show. TopMade's hinged models open from 15° or 0° up to 170° or 180°. If you watch video on the phone at lunch or on a plane, the hinge is the most useful extra you can add. If you only pay with it, the flat wallet is lighter and slimmer in the pocket.

What to look for in the build

Good MagSafe wallets are carefully crafted rather than glued together: stitched edges, vegan leather or PU leather that doesn't stretch, and a built-in clip or slots that keep cards secure when the wallet is half empty. Check that the magnets are sealed inside the leather, that a thumb slot lets you push cards out without having to remove the wallet, and that the maker stands behind it with a warranty — TopMade covers its wallets for 12 months, some for 24.

Think about convenience, too. A wallet you have to worry about — one that slides when you put the iPhone in a pocket or falls off with phone cases — is not an accessory you will keep using. The best magnetic phone wallet is the one you forget is there until you need a card.

4. Do you need Find My?

A wallet with Apple Find My built in shows up in the Find My app next to your keys and AirPods. It plays a sound, shows the last known location, warns you when you leave it behind and can be put in Lost Mode. TopMade puts the tracker inside the leather, so there is no AirTag to buy and the back stays flat; the battery charges on any wireless pad and lasts four to six months.

If you already own an AirTag, the AirTag pocket wallet carries it instead. If you never lose things, skip the tracker and save the money.

5. Cases

A MagSafe case has its own ring of magnets and keeps the wallet's hold almost as strong as on a bare phone. A plain case — silicone, leather, rugged — without magnets puts distance between the magnets and breaks the connection. Either switch to a MagSafe case, use a magnetic ring sticker on the case, or choose a stick-on wallet that uses 3M adhesive instead of magnets.

6. Android and older iPhones

Galaxy S24, S25, S26 and Z Fold phones accept a magnetic wallet once they wear a magnetic case; TopMade's Galaxy wallet is made for them. Pixels and older iPhones can do the same with a magnetic ring stuck to the case. Find My tracking, however, needs an iPhone.

Will a magnetic wallet damage cards or the phone?

No. Chip and contactless payments don't use the magnetic stripe at all, and TopMade wallets add a metal mesh lining that shields stripes from the magnets. The same lining blocks RFID scanners. The phone is not affected; just take the wallet off before wireless charging, because cards between the coil and the phone slow charging and get warm.
